Maine Coon

Maine Coon cats are one of the most popular variety of cats found in the world. Although mostly seen in the USA and in Europe, Maine Coon is also becoming a popular choice in other parts of the world. These cats are not only cheerful and playful but are also quite intelligent. Bright eyes and smart appearance is an integral part of Maine Coon cats. It is surprising as to how these cats survived th most trying situations of natural selection. Over the years, Maine Coon have developed themselves into a strong variety of cats with a water resistant fur covering and a constitution that can survive even in extreme conditions.

Many an interesting tales are associated with the origin and development of Maine Coon. Many a biologists are of the opinion that once upon a time a domestic variety of cats were released in the dense forests of Maine. They then bred with the Racoons, a fleecy kind of animal belonging to the feline variety. Their off springs are known as Maine Coon today. A host of other breeding theories hint at a different kind of breeding . According to them an unusual kind of breeding took place between the Angora types of cat and the long hairs brought by the Vikings.

An average Maine Coon has wild look and is full of a thick coat of fur. An over sized Maine Coon can weigh up to 11 to 12 kilograms. Female Maine Coon naturally weigh less than the male Maine Coon. A Maine Coon may take as long as four to five years to reach its full growth. Besides non vegetarian preparations prepared at home you may always offer prescribed pet foods to your pet Maine Coon. The eye color of Maine Coon vary widely. But the most common eye colors are shades of gold and green. Maine Coon come in a variety of hues. Lavender, chocolate, brown with tabby marks, tortoise shell, ticked tabby and Siamese patterns are the most common ones. Another interesting feature of all Maine Coon cats is that almost all varieties of the cat bears a “M” mark on the forehead.

The chest of Maine Coon are filled with soft fleece often dense like that of a lion. Nature has blessed the Maine Coon cats with a double coat of furs. Immediately below the long fur lies a less dense covering of smaller furs. These furs are not only hardy but water resistant and offer a great comfort from extreme climatic conditions to the Maine Coon. Besides having bushy elongated tails, Maine Coon has long hairs on the hind side of their legs. Angular heads and squared off muzzles with wide set ears are some of the unique characteristics of the Maine Coon. Although Maine Coons take a good care of their hair, regular brushing on the part of the pet owner will only add on to the glamor of the Maine Coon. Besides, having a Lynx like appearance, dexterity and playfulness are an integral part of all the cute Maine Coons under the sun. if well trained your Maine Coon will do many a difficult task with utmost ease.
